# An empty Solana address history: what to check first

Separate the wrong cluster, address choice and retained history before treating an empty response as lost data.

## What the response actually says

`getSignaturesForAddress` searches transactions referencing one address. A successful empty result says that the queried node found no matching signatures for that request. It does not establish that the address never had activity. An account may have been closed, and its earlier transactions may still exist elsewhere.

## Build one reproducible request

```
{"jsonrpc":"2.0","id":1,"method":"getSignaturesForAddress","params":["ADDRESS",{"limit":20,"commitment":"confirmed"}]}
```

Replace ADDRESS with a real base58 address. Save the endpoint, cluster, response and time. Compare against a signature you already know involved that address. A wallet address and one of its token accounts are different search keys.

## Narrow the cause

1. Verify the cluster. Mainnet, devnet and testnet maintain separate histories.
2. Remove before/until cursors and retry a small first page. A cursor may simply place the query beyond available records.
3. Check the address actually appears in the known transaction account keys. Token activity can involve a token account associated with the wallet.
4. Compare a known slot with getFirstAvailableBlock, then check the provider's transaction-index retention. The block floor alone does not describe every index.

## Decide what your application can conclude

Store an explicit unknown-history state when your evidence is incomplete. A null `getAccountInfo` is a statement about current account state, including accounts that were closed; it cannot prove no past activity. Repeatedly querying an unchanged index does not recover pruned records. For decoded DEX analysis, inspect the relevant Indexer table and its own coverage rather than assuming it is a general wallet archive.
